Qassim University reaches out to the local community on energy efficiency and clean energy through community courses on rationalizing electricity use at home, short programmes on energy efficiency and solar-cell manufacturing, public conferences and workshops on solar energy and energy rationalization, field visits to solar power plants, and participation in environment forums open to the public.
Engineering students visit the Ar Rass 2 solar power plant
On 28 October 2025 the College of Engineering student club organised a field visit for 22 students to the Ar Rass 2 solar power plant operated by ACWA Power, where they learned how electricity is generated from solar energy on a large scale and saw clean-energy technology in operation.
University participation in the First Qassim International Environment Forum
Qassim University, represented by the Sustainable Development Center, took part in the two-day First Qassim International Environment Forum at King Khalid Cultural Center in Buraidah. It presented to the public its green-campus practices, including policies to raise energy efficiency and expand clean energy through the solar energy project and full reliance on treated water for irrigation, together with its research in water, energy and climate. It also highlighted its community role through the Sustainable Development Center: environmental studies, consultations and specialised training programmes, and community partnerships and volunteer initiatives across the cities and governorates of the region.
MicroX short programmes: “Energy Efficiency Fundamentals” and “Solar Cell Manufacturing”
Through the MicroX initiative, the University launched four short programmes in the energy and utilities sector, including “Energy Efficiency Fundamentals”, which covers efficiency concepts and ways of reducing energy consumption in buildings, industry and transport, and “Solar Cell Manufacturing”, spreading practical knowledge of energy efficiency and solar energy.
MoU with the Qassim Science and Technology Association (Qassim Science Center)
Under the patronage of the Emir of Qassim, the University signed an MoU with the Qassim Science and Technology Association (Qassim Science Center) to develop training and applied programmes, support scientific research, and organise workshops and interactive activities. The areas of cooperation include science and technology education and awareness programmes for the community, STEM, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energy, environment and water, space sciences, innovation and entrepreneurship, training and community service, as well as specialised volunteer programmes and the development of educational and training kits.
Community course: “Rationalizing Electricity Consumption at Home”
The Community Partnership Unit of the College of Engineering in Unaizah offered a remote course for members of the community on rationalizing electricity consumption at home. It covered electric power and energy, household loads, the consumption of home appliances, how to calculate the electricity bill, practical rationalization methods and the energy-efficiency label for air conditioners, and participants received an attendance certificate.
Saudi Arabia begins accepting scientific abstracts for its international conference on "Solar Energy Prospects in the Kingdom"
The university, represented by the College of Engineering, announced the commencement of receiving scientific abstracts for the international conference «Solar Energy Prospects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Applications and Challenges,» which will be held from April 1-2, 2020. The university invited researchers wishing to participate in this international conference to submit their scientific research abstracts through the conference link. ;Abstracts will be received until October 31, 2019, and accepted abstracts will be announced on November 15, 2019.
The conference aims to invite leading academics and researchers in solar energy applications and industry experts from Saudi Arabia and around the world to share experiences, challenges, and results. It also aims to enhance and develop promising solar energy technologies to support and achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, as well as to contribute to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in diversifying the economy currently based on oil, transforming the Kingdom from a leading oil exporting country to a sustainable energy exporting country.
For his part, the head of the conference’s scientific committee, Dr. Meshal Al-Mushaiqeh, Dean of the College of Engineering, explained that this conference is being held in line with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to support the national economy, reduce reliance on oil, and raise awareness of the importance of solar energy as an abundant source of renewable energy in the Kingdom. The conference also covers the current status and developments in solar energy technologies and applications, including, for example, solar thermal energy, photovoltaics, and solar architecture, noting that the conference will focus on the use of solar energy engineering in various academic, governmental, and industrial applications in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and on benefiting from past experiences in this vital field.
Al-Mushaiqih added that the conference will discuss a number of themes, including: generating electricity using solar energy, storing it, and desalination using it, as well as solar heating and cooling applications, passive and active solar applications in buildings, in addition to a section on solar energy applications in transportation and their management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The College of Engineering’s two-day international conference on the applications and challenges of solar energy in the Kingdom concluded with 12 scientific recommendations after 10 scientific sessions, with academics, researchers and industry experts from inside and outside the Kingdom.
