Policy statement and purpose
1.1. Qassim University (QU), located in the heart of the Kingdom, is committed to contributing to national and global efforts to mitigate marine pollution and protect aquatic ecosystems. Although the Qassim Region is inland, the University actively supports research, education, and outreach initiatives that promote sustainable management of marine and freshwater environments across Saudi Arabia. This policy reflects QU’s dedication to safeguarding water resources for present and future generations.
1.2. This policy is aligned with Saudi Arabia’s initiatives in tackling marine pollution:
- Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): Saudi Arabia has designated several Marine Protected Areas to conserve biodiversity and protect sensitive marine habitats. These areas help in safeguarding marine life and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
- Reducing Plastic Pollution: The nation has implemented measures to reduce plastic pollution, such as banning single-use plastics and promoting recycling. These actions contribute to curbing the flow of plastics into marine environments.
- Promoting Sustainable Fishing: Saudi Arabia has introduced regulations to ensure the sustainability of fisheries, such as setting fishing quotas and implementing closed seasons to allow fish stocks to replenish.
- Coral Reef Conservation: Given the significance of coral reefs, Saudi Arabia has initiated projects to monitor and conserve these delicate ecosystems. Coral restoration efforts contribute to preserving biodiversity and maintaining healthy marine environments.
1.3. The policy also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s commitments to the World Oceans Union and the Alliance for the elimination of plastic waste in oceans.
2. Objectives of the Policy and Guidelines
2.1. Qassim University recognizes its role in supporting national and global efforts to tackle marine pollution and promote healthy aquatic ecosystems through:
- Research and Innovation: The University follows and contributes to research developments on marine pollution, plastic waste, and their impact on marine and freshwater systems. By developing innovative solutions, such as biodegradable materials and sustainable waste management techniques, Qassim University supports national efforts to reduce pollution.
- Curriculum Integration: Marine and aquatic sustainability topics are incorporated into relevant courses across disciplines. By educating students on the importance of water ecosystems and the threats they face, the University fosters environmental awareness among future professionals.
- Community Engagement: The University organizes awareness programs on pollution and conservation targeting inland and coastal communities through seminars and outreach initiatives, encouraging sustainable behavior.
- Partnerships and Advocacy: Qassim University collaborates with national agencies, research institutions, and non-profit and civil society organizations to support marine and aquatic conservation initiatives across the Kingdom.
3. Scope of the Policy
3.1. This policy applies universally to all colleges, academic departments, research centers, laboratories, administrative units, campus facilities, and external partnerships affiliated with Qassim University, as well as to waste management and disposal techniques.
4. Implementation and Monitoring
4.1. A detailed action plan will be developed to define specific initiatives, assign responsibilities, and set timelines for supporting national efforts to prevent and minimize marine and aquatic pollution. The plan will also outline strategies for adopting best practices and tracking progress through measurable indicators.
4.2. The University will comply with national environmental regulations and policies related to water and marine ecosystems, as issued by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) and the National Center for Environmental Compliance (NCEC). This policy shall be reviewed every two years by the Center for Sustainable Development, in coordination with the University Council, to ensure its continued relevance, effectiveness, and compliance with national legislation.
