Overview
The Department of History was established in (1398 AH/1978 AD) under the umbrella of the College of Sharia and Arabic Language, a branch of Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Qassim. Not long after, in (1401 AH/1980 AD), this college was separated into two colleges: the College of Sharia and Principles of Religion, and the College of Arabic and Social Sciences. In (1424 AH/2003 AD), a Royal Order was issued to merge the branch of Imam Muhammad bin Saud University with the branch of King Saud University in Qassim, thus establishing Qassim University. At that time, the college's name was changed to the College of Arabic Language and Social Studies. Concurrently, the University Council suspended admissions to the History Bachelor's program for four years, after which the matter of readmitting students would be reconsidered due to a large number of history graduates in the Kingdom awaiting employment. Teaching continued in the program for the cohorts admitted before the suspension until all male and female students graduated. During this period, the University Council approved the opening of a Master's program with two specialized tracks: Islamic History and Modern History, followed by two similar programs for Doctorate degrees. The Department recommended reopening admissions to the Bachelor's program, linking its recommendation to accepting no more than forty male students per cohort. The University Council's decision (4-2-1435/1436 AH) approved this, and students were admitted in 1437 AH. In the academic year 1441 AH, admissions were opened for female students with the same quota allocated to male students. In (1445 AH/2024 AD), the department was developed, and its name was changed to the Department of History and Heritage with three programs: * Bachelor's Program * Master of Arts in History and Civilization Program * Doctor of Philosophy in History and Civilization Program
