UQU organizes the first coordination meeting for sustainable local development partners in Qassim

The university, represented by the Center for Sustainable Development, held a workshop on Tuesday, April 18, 1443 AH, titled “The First Coordination Meeting for Sustainable Local Development Partners in the Qassim Region.” The workshop took place in the training hall of the College of Arabic Language and Social Studies, at the main campus in the university city. The event was attended by His Excellency the Vice President of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Turki, and a number of representatives from governmental and private entities in Qassim.

This initiative comes as part of the Center's efforts to cooperate with all stakeholders in the Al-Qassim region in everything that contributes to achieving the sustainable development goals in the Kingdom, and to crystallize the idea of establishing a regional coordination body regarding these goals to enable all partners to contribute effectively in this field. The coordination body will undertake effective contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030, including promoting the concept of shared prosperity and inclusivity in light of national sustainability standards and the Kingdom's Vision 2030.

It also achieves a package of sub-goals, including: developing the institutional performance of the Qassim region in the field of sustainable development by proposing policies, plans, and programs, as well as developing institutional performance by providing technical advice to the Qassim Regional Council supporting sustainable local development in the region. In addition, it improves integration among partners in the region and ensures their effective participation in sustainable development projects, enhances the role of Saudi women and raises their contributions to the development of the local community, as well as developing mechanisms for follow-up, evaluation, and documentation of the efforts and evidence provided by partners in achieving sustainable development.

On his part, His Excellency the Vice President of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research, Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Turki, emphasized in his speech during the opening of the workshop that today's meeting aims to establish a coordination body concerned with a topic of great importance, which society needs in all its parts, entities, and details, namely sustainable development. He pointed out that we are in dire need to spread, cultivate, and implant this concept in individuals, institutions, and entities of society, as it is one of the important parts of the life we live. From this perspective, sustainable development has become one of the pillars targeted by the 2030 vision to form a vibrant, prosperous, and continuously investing society of its energies and potentials.

He added, “Al-Turki,” that we hear the term development a lot, but its implementation in reality has been largely absent in some parts of our lives. He pointed out that today he met with various departments to cooperate with the university in establishing this entity, expressing his great hope that it will result in a cohesive and strong team with sound reasoning and power, which will enter society to launch the concept of sustainable development and its applications effectively in society.

The workshop, as part of its activities, addressed a number of themes, including an introduction to the Sustainable Development Center and its vision for local development, as well as a review of the idea of establishing a coordination entity for local development partners. Additionally, it included the vision of the region's Investment Development Committee regarding strengthening cooperation with local development partners. The floor was then opened for discussion and open deliberation on the themes related to the workshop's topic.
