SDG 6.5.5: Cooperation on water security
Water security is an increasingly important challenge globally, especially in arid and semi-arid regions such as Saudi Arabia, where pressures from water scarcity, pollution, climate change and multiple water uses are increasing. Qassim University contributes to water security through research, education, policy advice and practical applications. The university's strategic plan emphasizes sustainability, community engagement and applied research, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 6 on clean water and hygiene. The university works in formal and informal partnerships with government agencies, other academic institutions, industry, civil society organizations, local communities, and international networks to improve water security outcomes including availability, quality, resilience, and equity of access to water.
Qassim University obtains a patent for a water desalination system using a salt plant.
Qassim University has obtained a patent from the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property for its invention of a "system and method for desalinating water using a salt-bearing plant."
This system uses a closed biological system that can convert highly saline water into distilled fresh water. The system operates normally and can produce fresh water in commercial quantities.
