The Al-Qassim University, represented by the Institute of Studies and Consulting Services, in cooperation with the General Authority for Food Security, intends to hold a «Food Loss and Waste Hackathon» under the theme «Today we innovate… for a future without waste and loss,» in conjunction with the International Day for Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, with the participation of a select group of innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, experts, and sustainability enthusiasts, with the aim of developing practical solutions that are applicable and adoptable to address the challenges of food loss and waste in the Kingdom.
The Hackathon comes as a national initiative that contributes to addressing the challenge of food loss and waste by attracting specialized talents and capabilities, enabling participants to innovate solutions that target the root causes across the various stages of the food value chain, and utilizing modern technologies, data, and artificial intelligence in developing digital and operational solutions that contribute to improving supply chains, forecasting food needs, and measuring the indicators of loss and waste.
The Hackathon aims to engage professionals in addressing the issue of food loss and waste through practical solutions that are feasible, stimulate innovation at the stages of the food value chain, strengthen active partnership between the various sectors involved in food, contribute to achieving the objectives of the Kingdom Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, and support the National Program «Tadem» to reduce food loss and waste.
The Hackathon targets university and college students, researchers in the fields of agriculture and supply chains, entrepreneurs and developers, designers, professionals in the food sector, charitable associations and food banks, as well as those interested in sustainability, bringing together young energy, scientific and field expertise, technological and innovative capabilities to develop sustainable and implementable solutions.
The hackathon includes five main tracks, including: technological and digital innovation, innovation in manufacturing and processing, innovation in operational models and supply chains, innovation in business models and financing, and behavioral and awareness innovation.
