The eye clinic in the comprehensive campaign organized by Qassim University in Aqlah Al-Suqur governorate was able to detect a number of emergency cases that pose a risk to the patient's health if neglected or ignored, as a late case was discovered for an elderly man who urgently needs a cornea transplant, and a pigmented tumor was discovered in the conjunctiva of the eye for a young boy who needs an urgent procedure to remove this tumor.
Dr. Abdulaziz Muhammad Al-Hadlaq, Assistant Professor at the University's College of Medicine and Consultant of Retina and Eye Infections and one of the participants in the optometry clinic, explained that the aim of participating in this service campaign is to raise awareness, educate and detect a large number of cases in the triage clinic and then in the specialized clinics and give the patient some medical or therapeutic advice, in addition to referring all cases that require surgical or therapeutic intervention to hospitals for necessary examinations and rapid intervention, whether in university clinics affiliated with Qassim University or in other specialized hospitals inside and outside the region.
The optometry clinic received a 60-year-old diabetic patient, who complained of poor eyesight for a period ranging from three to six months. He was examined and found to be suffering from advanced diabetic retinopathy and needed laser sessions in addition to a needle in the eye.
Al-Hadlaq emphasized that such cases can lead to blindness if not detected, adding that the patient was referred to a hospital in Buraydah for advanced examinations needed in keratoconus cases, as he will likely need a cornea transplant urgently.
A 15-year-old boy accompanied by his father visited the clinic at the main headquarters of the campaign. He had been suffering from an eye injury for 10 years, and it was fate that the university campaign came to serve the governorate and neighboring centers, so his father brought him to the specialists. The initial examination revealed that he suffered from a change in eye color, with a suspected pigmented tumor in the conjunctiva of the eye, and he was referred for examination under a surgical microscope, as he needs to remove this tumor quickly before it multiplies.
