As one of the largest universities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the university bears a national and societal responsibility towards our dear homeland and its wise leadership – may God protect them – and its loyal people. This national responsibility has led it to harness all its scientific and academic capabilities in serving the community of the Qassim region in particular, and the Kingdom in general. This is achieved by linking the research and academic community with fields of production, whether industrial, agricultural, or service-based.
The Dean of the College of Science at the university has been consistently committed to innovation through training students and providing them with consulting services. This includes initiatives that began even before the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic. With the university's support, the college produced all types of detergents, sanitizers, and disinfectants as an example of effective projects that combine academic study with practical application. All products are manufactured by the college's students under the supervision of specialized professors in the College's Chemistry department.
With the outbreak of the Corona crisis at the beginning of last year, which affected the shape and style of life worldwide, and everyone's rush for sanitizers, disinfectants, and cleaners to prevent the spread of viral infection, the College of Science at the university played a pioneering and leading role in providing high-quality hand and surface sanitizers with effective germ and virus-killing capabilities, including the novel coronavirus “COVID 19.” The College of Science intensified its production to meet the increased demand across all university departments. The sanitizers were distributed to university offices, administrations, students, and visitors for personal use.
The College of Science at the university provided many disinfectants that are effectively used for sterilizing laboratories, classrooms, and student lounges. The college's products have proven the capability of our national cadres of students and professors to compete commendably with international brands of hand and surface disinfectants, as the products met the international specifications of the World Health Organization (WHO).
For his part, Dr. Fahad Al-Mandaraj, Dean of the College of Science at Qassim University, emphasized that the college’s products—including disinfectants, sanitizers, and cleaning agents—feature competitive specifications, such as: an active ingredient concentration in the sanitizer (ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol) of no less than 70%, noting that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stated that for sanitizers to work properly, their alcohol concentration must exceed 60%,” The college’s product also contains moisturizers and hand conditioners, with the addition of glycerin and natural oils such as lavender oil, which moisturize the skin and prevent skin infections.
Al-Mundarij explained that the product manufactured at the college contains high-quality carbolic acid, which acts as a thickening agent; when combined with the aqueous base, it allows the alcohol to remain on the hands long enough to kill viruses and germs. Distilled, salt-free water is used to prevent the hands from drying out, He noted that physical, chemical, and biological tests are conducted to ensure the product’s quality in terms of consistency and viscosity, as well as to verify that the alcohol content—as the active ingredient—is no less than 70%.
He added that biological tests are also conducted to ensure the product's efficiency and its ability to kill various germs and microbes. The product does not contain any additives harmful to the skin or that cause allergies. Sanitizers with different scents, such as lemon and mint, are also made, which have proven their quality and efficiency in sterilization and cleaning.
