Goal 2 is about creating a world without hunger by 2030. Global hunger and food insecurity have worsened alarmingly since 2015, a trend that has increased due to a combination of factors including pandemics, conflicts, climate change and rising inequality.
By 2022, nearly 735 million people - or 9.2% of the world's population - will find themselves chronically hungry - a shocking rise compared to 2019. This data underscores the gravity of the situation and reveals a growing crisis.
In addition, an estimated 2.4 billion people faced moderate to severe food insecurity in 2022. This categorization refers to their lack of access to adequate nutrition. This number has risen alarmingly to 391 million people compared to 2019.
The continued rise in hunger and food insecurity, fueled by a complex interplay of factors, requires immediate attention and coordinated global efforts to alleviate this serious humanitarian challenge.
Severe hunger and malnutrition remain a barrier to sustainable development and create a trap from which people cannot easily escape. Hunger and malnutrition mean less productive and more disease-prone individuals, often unable to earn more and improve their livelihoods. 2 billion people in the world do not have regular access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. In 2022, 148 million children were stunted, and 45 million children under the age of five were affected by wasting.
