Inequality threatens long-term social and economic development, undermines poverty reduction and destroys people's sense of fulfillment and self-worth.
The income of the poorest 40 percent of the population is growing faster than the national average in most countries. Emerging but insufficient evidence suggests the possibility that COVID-19 may have put an end to this positive trend of narrowing the inequality gap within each country.
The pandemic has also deepened the inequality gap between countries to the largest in three decades. Reducing inequality within and between countries requires equitable distribution of resources, investing in education and skills development, implementing social protection measures, combating discrimination, supporting marginalized groups, and strengthening international cooperation for fair trade and financial systems.
Why do we need to reduce inequalities?
Inequalities based on income, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity, religion and opportunity persist around the world. Inequality threatens long-term social and economic development, undermines poverty reduction and destroys people's sense of achievement and self-worth. This breeds crime, disease and environmental degradation. We cannot achieve sustainable development and make our planet a better place for all if people are excluded from the opportunity for a better life.
