His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Nawaf bin Abdulaziz, Emir of Al-Jouf Region, honored two university faculty members, Dr. Saleh Sulaiman Saleh Al-Huwairini, Associate Professor of Pesticide Toxicity at the Department of Plant Production and Protection at the University's College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, and Professor Dr. Mahmoud Mustafa Al-Azzazi, Professor of Icarus at the Department of Plant Production and Protection at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, for winning the Olive Research Award in Al-Jouf, during the 12th International Olive Festival in Al-Jouf region, held on Wednesday 19/5/140 AH at the Prince Abdullah Cultural Center in Sakaka.
The award-winning research aimed at biocontrol of Icarus pests infecting olive trees using a local predator registered in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Biocontrol is one of the most important means of integrated pest management, which is characterized by eliminating pests without resorting to the use of chemical pesticides whose indiscriminate use leads to environmental pollution, as well as their impact on natural enemies and other negative effects on non-targeted pests.
According to specialists and experts, the research is of great scientific and applied value for those interested in organic farming and producing a safe and clean agricultural crop away from the residual effect of pesticides, as this goal is the modern trend in pest control globally.
