Course Description: In this course, students will learn about the elements and characteristics of analytical hadith commentary, the most important hadith شرح books, and supporting books such as those on hadith unfamiliar terms, abrogating and abrogated hadith, and conflicting hadith. They will also learn about scholars' methodologies in deriving rulings and using hadith as evidence, and the reasons for their differences in interpreting hadith, benefiting from the foundational principles upon which commentators' derivations are based. Furthermore, students will practice analytical commentary and train on selected hadith from the curriculum.

Objectives of the course :

Introducing students to the characteristics of analytical explanation of prophetic hadith, while having them examine the methodologies of the Imams among the commentators in deriving rulings and inferring from hadiths.

Statement of the analytical elements of explaining the Hadith, summarized as follows:
A. Classifying the hadith and studying its chains of transmission by referring to its original sources in the books of Sunnah, including, where possible, a diagrammatic representation of the hadith, the context of its text, and an explanation of the differences found in its various narrations.
b. Mentioning the unique features found in the chains of transmission, such as a narration from fathers to their sons, or the fact that all the narrators are from Mecca, or that they are imams, or that it was transmitted through a chain said to be the most authentic of all, and other such subtleties that are inherent in every chain of transmission.
C - Explanation of the terms mentioned in the hadith, which includes:
● Explanation of unusual terms.
● It is clear that the analysis of modern terms is the first step in deduction and reasoning; therefore, attention should be paid to this analysis while linking it to the context of the sentence and without neglecting any variations in meaning or omissions in the text.
D. Clarification of the methods scholars use to interpret terms, as their interpretation may be based on verses of the Quran, hadith, the works of linguists, or specialized sources on rare terms.
e. Carefully explaining words that are ambiguous or open to multiple interpretations in terms of grammatical analysis and pronunciation, and clarifying any resulting differences in meaning, if any, and to indicate the meanings of grammatical structures, the connotations of phrases, the letters of meaning, grammatical and linguistic constructions, and the conjugation of nouns and verbs if it affects the clarification of meaning.
f. Paying attention to the rhetorical and linguistic aspects of the words and sentences used in the speech.
Z - Mention what can be inferred and extracted from hadiths regarding various branches of knowledge or sciences. This includes the Quran and its sciences, creed, jurisprudential and usul (legal theory) rulings, jurisprudential objectives and principles, legitimate governance, evidences of prophethood and miracles, ethics and conduct, as well as matters related to contemporary educational, pedagogical, psychological, social, administrative, economic, political, and other fields of knowledge.
H. An explanation of the general meaning of the hadith, which is: A comprehensive overview of all the issues addressed in the hadith, presented in a concise style. This approach was exemplified by earlier scholars in certain books of marginal notes that provide a general commentary on the hadith, such as those found in some sections of al-Suyuti’s marginal notes and al-Sindi’s works, and it is frequently found in the commentaries of contemporary scholars.
- Addressing any questions or doubts regarding the hadith, if any.
Taking care to clarify the differences in hadith, its problematic aspects, and what its apparent meaning suggests is contradictory.
K. Caring for the statement of contextual meaning and the reasons for the hadith's narration and its inclusion, and clarifying what of the hadiths are specific incidents or general situations.
An introduction to commentaries, which are the most important sources of analytical commentary, as follows:
A- The most important hadith commentary books for the Six Books, Malik's Muwatta, and a study of their characteristics, trends, authors' methodologies, and historical sequence.
B. Types of general commentaries, of which there are three: (topical commentary, thematic commentary, and mixed commentary), along with examples from modern commentaries.
c. An examination of the diversity of the commentators’ approaches, the variations in their treatment and elaboration of the elements of analytical commentary, and the reasons for such variations.
Introduction to the most famous books on Hadith Gharib, clarifying their scientific value, explaining the stages of authorship of Gharib books, how to benefit from them, the relationship between Hadith Gharib and linguistic dictionaries, with a brief overview of language dictionaries, especially Ibn Faris's Mu'jam Maqayis al-Lugha.
The jurisprudence of inference and its scientific controls, through the following points:
A. The Impact of Soundness, Weakness, Authenticity, and Non-Authenticity on Jurisprudential Inference
B. The Impact of Variations in Narrative Wording on Legal Inference.
C. The influence of linguistic theory, the meanings of words, and the concepts of the general and the specific, the absolute and the restricted, on legal deduction.
An applied study of examples of contemporary analytical commentaries in which the elements of the commentary are provided; while reading them, the focus is on linking them to the required elements of the commentary.
Each student is assigned a brief analytical research paper that includes the required explanatory elements; the papers are then presented in class for discussion to assess the students’ mastery of the skills covered in this course.
Thirty-seven selected hadiths from four of the most renowned sources of the Sunnah (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, and Muwatta’ Malik), along with their analysis using the analytical hadith methodology, and discussion of them over the course of several weeks of study.
