Introduction to School Counseling

Course Description: This course introduces the history and philosophy of school counseling, its ethical principles, and skills for identifying the current and expected role of the school counselor, along with knowledge of recent developments in the field. The course also describes the most important functions of the school counselor within and outside the school community, the most important services provided by school counseling, and intervention strategies for some student issues and problems. It covers the principles of school counseling and how to apply them with small or large counseling groups. Additionally, the course provides knowledge about several variables that affect the personal, social, and academic functions of children and adolescents, such as abuse, violence, eating and speech disorders, and childhood depression; symptoms and signs of substance abuse in adolescents and the role of the home; and the most important issues faced by gifted and creative students within the school community, their psychological needs, and counseling intervention strategies for them. Finally, the course presents some international models of school counseling, such as the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) international model and its components.
