Children with special needs

Course Description: This elective course focuses on providing students with a general concept of the different special needs of children and adolescents. It will cover the theoretical foundations of working with children and families who are subjected to abuse or neglect, as well as children with congenital or genetic disabilities. All students will be divided into small groups, each group will focus on a specific type of special need, relevant assessment procedures, treatment goals, current practices, and the role of the nurse/caregiver in different settings for these children and their families.
Credit hours: 3
Objectives of the course :

1. Demonstrate scientific knowledge of certain disabilities, including their characteristics, causes, and classification.
2. Describe the main components of special education procedures for children with special needs.
Understanding the role of identifying potential disabilities in children in making appropriate referrals.
4. Applying acquired knowledge of disabilities to appropriately adapt the early childhood environment to meet the needs of all children.
5. Adapt to the use of assessment tools and procedures for identifying special needs, and demonstrate the ability to use assessment data to design intervention strategies that integrate the goals and objectives of the care plan.
6. Identifying assessment procedures and therapeutic goals for each type of special need. .
7. Application of the nursing process in assessing and caring for the needs of children with special needs and their families in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
8. Develop a health education strategy for children with special needs that is tailored to their needs.

2. Describes the classifications, causes, and characteristics of children with physical, sensory, cognitive, emotional, and developmental disabilities.
3. Applies the nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care provided to children with special health needs.
Demonstrates effective communication skills and therapeutic interaction with children with special needs and their families.
5. Develops health education programs and supportive interventions appropriate for the child's condition and developmental stage.
6. Collaborates effectively with multidisciplinary teams to promote optimal growth, integration, and improved quality of life.
7. Advocates for the rights of children with special needs and their families in healthcare settings and institutions. .
