Language test

Course Description: This course provides students with an introduction to the fundamentals of language testing, assessment, and evaluation. It reviews a variety of different assessment theories and approaches, such as test validity, reliability, practicality, authenticity, objectivity, fairness, and others. The course also enables students to develop a test or assessment tool based on the theories studied. Furthermore, students will critically analyze the effectiveness and quality of any language test and its adherence to standard assessment principles. In addition, students will engage in intensive discussions about the differences between norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tests, formative and summative assessment, general and specific-purpose tests, as well as computer-based tests, scoring systems, and many other core topics. By the end of this course, students are expected to have acquired in-depth knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of how to design, review, and evaluate language tests.

Objectives of the course :

The main objective of this course is to introduce learners to the fundamentals of language testing and assessment, and to enable them to conduct a critical evaluation of language tests and their results.

Explanation of language testing theories and issues, and an overview of the latest developments in the field of language testing and assessment.

Definition of language proficiency test types.

Distinguishing between different methods of evaluating communicative competence and linguistic competence in a second language.
Classification of language test types and their diverse uses.
Development of a comprehensive and systematically designed language proficiency test based on language testing concepts.
Calendar of Language Tests and Tools in Light of Approved Assessment Theories.
Employing various technical tools to develop a computerized language test.
