Principles of Biochemistry

Course Description: Theoretical: Carbohydrates and their types – Fatty acids, lipids, and membranes – Amino acids and proteins – Enzymes – Vitamins and their role as cofactors – Nucleic acids and nucleotides. Practical: Detection of carbohydrates (Molisch test - Benedict's test – Barfoed's test - Seliwanoff's test - Iodine test – Osazone) – Oils and fats (Oily spot test – Solubility – Saponification) – Proteins and amino acids (Biuret – Millon's – Protein precipitation).

Prerequisites: CHEM247
Objectives of the course :
  • The course aims to introduce students to the general concepts and principles of biochemistry.
  • Study of the physical, chemical, and structural properties, and function of biomolecules in human nutrition
  • Students will be able to identify fundamental biological processes and phenomena in the human body at the molecular level using chemistry principles.
Course outputs :

At the end of studying this course, the student will be able to:

1. Description of the composition of different types of simple and complex sugars in human nutrition.

2. Description of the structural characteristics and other properties of amino acids and proteins in human nutrition.

3. Identification of lipids and description of the composition of oils and fats, phospholipids, and membranes

4. Description of the structure and dynamics of different types of vitamins and the role of enzymes in food catabolism.

5. Description of the structure and function of different types of nucleic acids, including DNA and RNA
