Philology

Course Description: Deals with the origin of the term "philology" and its concept, both ancient and modern, and the topics covered by philology.
Credits: 2
Objectives of the course :

- Providing the student with a comprehensive view of language in general, and Arabic in particular.
To enable the student to understand the efforts of Arab scholars in authorship, both ancient and modern.
– To reveal the status of the Arabic language among human languages, understand the factors of its survival and richness, and how to preserve and develop it to keep pace with everything new or modern.
Developing the student's horizons and broadening their understanding by studying issues specific to the Arabic language.
– Refining students' creative talents and linking them to everything new that serves the language of the Book of Allah (the Almighty).
– Developing the student's ability to understand some of the secrets of the Arabic language, and to capture these secrets from works of linguistic heritage and from the insights of modern scholars. .

Course outputs :

knowledge:

  • The student mentions the concept of philology, its history, and its topics.
  • The student will be able to recognize the language of the Quran, Arabism, and explain its status and superiority over other human languages, both ancient and modern. They will also understand the reasons for its distinction over other languages in its family and other human languages, as well as how to promote it to become universal, as it was during the early Islamic civilization.
  • The student will define Arabic dialects, the reasons for their existence in the past and present, and learn the easiest ways to bring about approximation between modern Arabic dialects in the Arab world.
  • The student understands the factors of influence and being influenced between human languages.
  •  For the student to establish the Arabic language, its linguistic family, and its position among the Semitic languages, and the extent of its influence by Islam.
  • The student will demonstrate the various linguistic phenomena, factors of their growth, and the most significant problems they face.

  • For the student to represent the different Arabic dialects.
  • The student applies what they have learned to various models from heritage books.
  • To analyze different linguistic phenomena and sound scientific thinking in the factors of language development.

  • Familiarity with linguistic phenomena and laws related to the course and distinguishing them from others.

  • The student will lead a discussion with their peers on: Language, its phenomena, growth problems, and dialects.
  • The student will participate with his colleagues in a seminar on: Language patterns and classification.
  • The student reads their classmates' work critically.

  • The student should use proper language in the discussion.
