1. Provide students with knowledge about the general principles of treatment for poisoning, toxicology, and drug overdose cases.
2. Train students to evaluate clinical data and recommend immediate care for critically ill patients who may require specialized pharmacological or technical interventions to maintain blood pressure, respiration, and other homeostatic functions, in addition to assisting in the management of the patient's underlying condition.
3. Train students in teamwork to instill the value of working within a team.
4. Training students in self-learning to equip them to face future challenges.
Knowledge and Understanding:
1.1 Description of the pathophysiology, risk factors, complications, clinical presentation, and management of a critically ill patient suffering from (e.g., trauma, shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome [ARDS], pain, agitation, delirium, stress ulcer, venous thromboembolism [VTE], poisoning, drug toxicity, overdose).
1.2 Identify common procedures performed in the intensive care unit for the management of critically ill patients (e.g., bronchoscopy, central venous catheterization, intubation, therapeutic hypothermia, balloon pump, left ventricular assist device, cooling devices, and mechanical ventilation).
1.3 Description of measures used in managing poisoning, drug toxicity, and overdose.
2. Skills:
2.1 Identification of drug-related problems in the management of a critically ill patient with (e.g., stress ulcer prophylaxis, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis and bowel regimen programs, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiogenic shock and hypovolemia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute kidney injury, shock, traumatic brain injury, pain, agitation, delirium, poisoning, toxicity, overdose).
2.2 Design, propose, and monitor treatment plans for critically ill patients suffering from (e.g., stress ulcer prophylaxis, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis and bowel regimen programs, cardiac dysrhythmias, cardiogenic shock and hypovolemic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute kidney injury, shock, traumatic brain injury, pain, agitation, delirium, poisoning, drug toxicity, overdose).
3. Values, Independence, and Responsibility:
3.1 Demonstrate the ability to work within a team.
3.2 Demonstrate the ability to learn independently.
