Introduction to Qur'anic Science

Course Description: Introduction to the science of Qira'at (recitations) and the concept of the Seven Ahruf (dialects/modes of recitation). This course defines the science of Qira'at, its importance, its source, origin, categories, conditions for acceptance, and rulings. It also covers the concept of Shadhdh (uncommon/irregular) recitations and the ruling on acting upon them, the difference between Shadhdh and Mutawatir (mass-transmitted) recitations, an overview of the Seven Imams of Qira'at and their narrators, and an examination of and refutation of doubts raised about the Qira'at.
Credit hours: 3
Objectives of the course :

• The student understands the meaning of *qira'at* and the difference between them and the seven *ahruf*.
• The student understands that the Uthmanic Qur'ans contain these readings.
The student will study a brief overview of the Seven Readers and their narrators.
• The student should deduce the ruling on irregular readings and the difference between them and the mutawatir readings.
• The student can respond to some doubts about the readings.
The student should possess the ethics of scholars in contemplating the Quran and the multiplicity of readings.
