Course Description: Veterinary protozoology is a branch of parasitology concerned with the study of protozoan parasites and their impact on animal and human health. The epidemiology of protozoal diseases has undergone significant changes in recent years due to environmental factors and changes in farming systems and animal movement, increasing their importance in both veterinary and public health. This course covers the latest information on the nomenclature, classification, general characteristics, life cycles, and medical and veterinary importance of protozoa, as well as the diseases they cause, with a focus on species prevalent in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The course also includes various diagnostic methods, such as microscopic, serological, immunological, and molecular examinations used to identify protozoal infections.
Credits: 2
Prerequisites: VMD 346
Objectives of the course :

This course aims to understand the impact of protozoan parasites on animal and human health through the study of the principles of parasitology and infectious diseases, in addition to environmental and evolutionary factors that influence the epidemiological patterns of these parasites. It also aims to:
• Provide students with sufficient knowledge about the nomenclature, classification, characteristics, pathogenicity, medical significance, and diagnostic methods of protozoa.
• Enable students to acquire the ability to diagnose protozoan parasites of medical and veterinary importance.

Course outputs :

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
• Application of recent advancements in veterinary protozoology in practical and clinical contexts.
• Identification of protozoan parasites of medical and veterinary importance and their differentiation using morphological characteristics and diagnostic methods.
Explain the life cycles, transmission patterns, and epidemiology of protozoan parasites.
• Analyzing the impact of protozoan infections on animal health and public health.
• Design and evaluate effective strategies for the prevention and control of diseases caused by protozoa.
• Demonstrate advanced scientific communication skills, including scientific writing, data analysis, and oral presentation.
