Arthropology

Course Description: Veterinary Entomology is a scientific discipline that studies the impact of arthropods and arthropod-borne diseases on animal and human health. The epidemiology of vector-borne pathogens has undergone significant changes in recent years, leading to increased interest in arthropod public health and the pathogens they transmit. In this course, students will learn the latest information on the nomenclature, classification, general characteristics of arthropods, the medical significance of arthropods and the diseases they cause, as well as diagnostic methods for arthropods of veterinary importance, especially those prevalent in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Diagnostic methods include microscopic, cultural, serological, immunological, and molecular characteristics of arthropods.
Credits: 2
Prerequisites: VMD 222
Objectives of the course :

This course aims to understand the impact of arthropods and vector-borne diseases on animal and human health by studying the principles of vector biology and infectious diseases, in addition to the ecological and evolutionary processes that determine the epidemiological patterns of arthropods and the diseases they transmit. It also aims to: provide students with sufficient knowledge regarding the nomenclature, classification, characteristics, pathogenicity, medical importance, and diagnostic methods of arthropods.
Empower students to gain the ability to diagnose medically important arthropods.

Course outputs :

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
• Adapt to and apply recent advancements in veterinary acarology.
• Selection and implementation of appropriate laboratory and field methods for the identification and diagnosis of arthropods.
• Demonstrate advanced scientific communication skills, including scientific writing, data analysis, and oral presentation.
• Application of recent advancements in veterinary acarology in practical and clinical contexts.
• Identify the main arthropod species of medical and veterinary importance and differentiate between them using morphological characteristics and diagnostic methods.
Explain the life cycles and metamorphosis patterns of arthropods and their role as disease vectors.
• Analysis of the impact of arthropod injuries and their transmitted diseases on animal health and public health.
• Design and evaluation of effective strategies for the control of arthropods and the prevention of arthropod-borne diseases.
• Demonstrate advanced scientific communication skills, including scientific writing, data analysis, and oral presentation.
