Introduction to Statistics and Probability

Course Description: Introduction to Statistics and definition of some statistical terms - Organizing and presenting statistical data - Measures of central tendency (mean - median - mode) for ungrouped data and for frequency distributions - Measures of dispersion (range - mean deviation - standard deviation and variance - coefficient of variation) for ungrouped data and frequency distributions - Sets, algebraic operations on sets - Definition of sample space - Event - Counting methods (basic rules - multiplication rule - addition rule - permutations - combinations) - Definition of probability - General probability law - Applications of probabilities - Conditional probability - Independence - Bayes' theorem and its applications - Definition of random variable - Probability function (probability distribution) - Expectation and variance of discrete and continuous random variables - Discrete probability distributions (Bernoulli - binomial - Poisson) - Normal distribution and its applications.
Credit hours: 3
Objectives of the course :

This course aims to familiarize the student with the methods and ways of collecting statistical data, as well as how to tabulate and organize it. It also aims to provide knowledge of using appropriate statistical concepts and measures to facilitate the description of the data used. Furthermore, this course aims to prepare the student to continue studying other advanced courses in this field, or at least to benefit from studying this course in scientific fields when needed.

Course outputs :

Acquiring knowledge by learning some basic concepts related to probability theory and statistical data and their uses.
Enhance the ability to use statistical measures and apply statistical methods to solve problems (economic, social, scientific, etc.). Acquire cognitive skills through thinking and solving some life problems. Enhance the ability to pursue advanced studies when needed in fields related to the scientific material of this course. Acquire numerical skills through the application and use of statistical measures and methods.
