Concentrated Solar Power Plants

Course Description: An overview of concentrating solar power systems, line and point focus concentrators, and collectors. Tracking mechanisms. Overall energy balance and explanation of different terms, thermal loss assessment, storage effect, transient effect, and analysis of specific types of reflective collectors. Fresnel concentrators. Temperature distributions, performance indicators. Central tower receivers. Economic and environmental implications. Assessment of concentrated solar power potential, and determination of renewable electricity potential.

Objectives of the course :

Develop the student's knowledge of the different components of a focus collector.
Developing critical awareness of the fundamental principles of concentrated solar power plant systems.
Develop students' ability to design concentrated solar power plants and their performance.
* Enable the student to realize the operational limits of non-focused collectors and the need for focused collectors.
Developing critical awareness of the economic and environmental impacts of concentrated solar power plants.
Develop graduates' ability to assess concentrated solar power potential.
Develop graduates' ability to understand the fundamental characteristics of concentrating solar power plants.
