Radiotherapy technology

Course Description: This course is designed primarily with the needs of resident physicians and clinical physicists in mind. Therefore, greater emphasis is placed on clinical physics practice. For resident physicians, the course provides fundamental radiation physics and the physical aspects of treatment planning for photon beams, electron beams, and brachytherapy sources. For the clinical physicist, up-to-date information on dosimetry is also presented.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: RAD 481
Objectives of the course :

• Understanding the physical characteristics of radiation generators used in radiotherapy machines (magnetron, linear accelerator, electron beam, heavy particle beams, neutrons).
• Gain fundamental knowledge of the physical theories behind devices and radiation sources.
• Learn the terminology, units, and data of radiation therapy dosage and treatment.
• Determination of the therapeutic uses of radioactive agents such as hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, and bone cancers.

Course outputs :

Knowledge and understanding:
• Definition of radiation dose metrics and radiation monitoring devices.
• Re-organization of clinical treatment planning in external beam photon therapy.
Skills:
Explain the basic concept of radiation therapy physics accurately.
• Evaluation of proper patient positioning and selection of exposure factors and shielding techniques.
Values:
• Justification for patient management in therapeutic and restraint positions.
Distinguish between photon beam therapy techniques.
