Course Description: The increasing integration of traditional nuclear medicine techniques and diagnostic radiology techniques – providing anatomical and functional information in a single set of recorded images – has provided powerful tools for disease diagnosis and assessment of treatment efficacy, while simultaneously increasing the need to expand imaging skills among imagers. This course addresses considerations of radioactivity, radionuclides, and radiopharmaceuticals. Enhanced equipment automation has also facilitated the reduction of quality assurance information.

Objectives of the course :

• Describe and name the methods of radioactive nuclide decay.
• Calculation of the half-life (physical, biological, and effective) of radionuclides, and exposure and dose from radionuclides.
• List the properties of radioisotopes used in medical and industrial fields.
• Mention radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine and their properties.
• Description of radionuclide production methods.
• Perform nuclear medicine examinations for selected cases (bone, kidney, brain, and liver scans).

Course outputs :

Knowledge and understanding:
• Define the underlying physics of radiation detectors and medical imaging devices.
• Recognition of the widespread use of hybrid imaging (e.g., PET/CT and SPECT/CT).
Skills:
Theoretical basis of medical imaging devices and ideas for radiation detectors.
• Differentiate between the basic operating principle of detectors, gamma cameras, and Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET).
Values:
• Evaluate the sound requirements necessary for the requested survey.
