Computer Applications in Radiology

Course Description: This course develops the computing and information technology competencies required in a modern medical imaging department. It covers computer and network fundamentals, data storage, Radiology Information System (RIS), Hospital Information System (HIS), DICOM standard, Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), as well as image processing and post-processing software, departmental workflow, and information security, preparing the student to use and assist in managing radiology informatics tools.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: RAD 230
Objectives of the course :

• Understand hardware, software, and networks in the radiology department.
• Description of RIS, HIS, and PACS systems and the DICOM standard.
• Application of image processing software, post-processing, and reconstruction.
• Understanding the impact of informatics on workflow, communication, and cost-effectiveness.
• Appreciating data security and patient confidentiality.

Course outputs :

Knowledge and understanding:
• Definition of computing concepts, RIS/HIS/PACS systems, and the DICOM standard.
• Differentiating between the structure and characteristics of analog and digital images.
Skills:
• Operate image processing software and PACS to produce diagnostic images.
• Explain the departmental workflow with and without IT tools and measure the difference.

Apply data protection and patient confidentiality standards when handling digital images.
