Digital image processing and archiving systems

Course Description: The course content provides fundamental knowledge of digital storage systems, computer networks, Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). The course covers front-line skills for RIS/PACS, develops specialized knowledge and understanding of the RIS/PACS manager role, and prepares the student for comprehensive system management. This includes the skills required across the entire project lifecycle, from initial specification, system procurement, implementation, and management of actual operation.

Objectives of the course :

Understand the components and functions of a PACS system.
• Appreciate the importance of PACS in digitizing, processing, transferring, and archiving medical images.
• Applying image processing and reconstruction techniques as needed.
• Recognize the impact of PACS on workflow and improve communication among healthcare providers in a cost-effective manner.

Course outputs :

Knowledge and understanding:
• Definition of PACS and other medical health system related computer software.
• List PACS components and describe their functions.
Skills:
• Differentiating between the structure and characteristics of analog and digital images.
• Explain the workflow with and without PACS and measure the difference.

• Show the necessary changes for medical imaging departments to transition from film-based to filmless imaging.
• Processing X-ray images and producing more diagnostic images.
