Course Description: This course is concerned with linking the fundamental knowledge and clinical applications acquired from previous levels to prepare the student for understanding the specialty of radiation biology at the level of solving clinical problems in the clinical field. The student must understand the different dose-response models for radiation effects, the risk versus benefit in the use of radiation, and become familiar with sources of information that help in assessing these risks.

Objectives of the course :

• Describe the cell cycle and discuss the radiosensitivity of each phase.
• Discussing how cell survival depends on Linear Energy Transfer (LET).
Definition of principles for how radiation deposits energy that may cause biological effects.
• Explanation of the difference between direct and indirect effects, how radiation affects DNA, and how damage is repaired.
• Comparison of the radiosensitivity of different organs.
Understand the thresholds of deterministic effects and acute radiation syndromes for the whole body.
