Contrast media in medical imaging

Course Description: This course highlights and enumerates applicable contrast media in all radiological imaging modalities (X-ray, MRI, and Ultrasound), their administration methods and purposes, side effects, management strategies, and related medications used before/after contrast media administration, in addition to selected cases imaged with contrast media.

Prerequisites: RAD 221
Objectives of the course :

• Differentiate between the types of contrast media used in radiology.
Understand the purpose of using contrast media.
• Understanding the types of contrast media, their physical and chemical properties, and their applications in radiology.
- Describe the potential side effects of contrast media.
• Prevention, reduction, and treatment of the effects of contrast media on the body when they occur.

Course outputs :

Knowledge and understanding:
• Identification of contrast media, differentiation between them, administration methods, and related applications.
Skills:
• Explain the benefits and risks of contrast media injections for the patient and justify the occurrence of side effects.
• Prepare the patient for contrast media examination and perform appropriate injections.

• Management of adverse effects of contrast media in selected therapeutic regimens.
• Handling automated devices and injectors appropriately with contrast media.
