Radiographic image registration and processing methods

Course Description: This course covers the following aspects: image fundamentals and types, principles of radiographic image formation on films, factors controlling the radiographic image and accessories used, film types and processing chemistry, highlighting image defects and distortions, explanation of automatic processing units and comparison with manual processing, and an introduction to digital imaging.

Prerequisites: RAD 211
Objectives of the course :

• Identify all types of screens and intensified screens used in medical imaging, differentiate between them, and describe image formation.
• Identify the most common factors affecting image quality.
• Understanding of processing chemistry and preparation.
• Justification of the existence of defects and image distortions.
• Compare the effects of different accessories used in photography and image quality control with varying factors.
• Explanation of manual and automated processing of radiological films.
• Implement silver recovery from X-ray film and operate/maintain the automatic processor.

Course outputs :

Knowledge and understanding:
• Identify all types of films and intensifying screens used in photography and differentiate between them, and describe image formation and its conversion into a visible image through different processing methods.
Skills:
• Comparison of cassette sizes in X-ray images, and comparison of the effects of accessories, exposure factors, and chemicals used.
• Clarification and performance of manual and automated radiographic film processing.
Values:
• Control the image quality with variable factors and justify the presence of defects.
• Implementing silver recovery from X-ray film and preparing film and intensifying screens and installing radiation detectors.
