Physics of rays

Course Description: This course aims to provide the fundamental link between elementary physics and the sub-disciplines of medical physics. It covers a specific set of topics related to radiation physics that form the essential knowledge base required for practitioners in contemporary medical physics.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: PHYS110
Objectives of the course :

• Familiarity with basic knowledge of electronics and physics related to X-ray imaging devices.
Understanding the different types of atomic energy.
Understanding the process of radiation production.
• Explanation of electric and magnetic fields, laws of electromagnetic induction, and their principles.
• Identify the different types of radioactive materials.
• Understanding the interaction of radiation with matter.

Course outputs :

• Understanding how photons and charged particles are attenuated within matter and the terminology used to describe attenuation.
• Recall concepts of dose-related quantities and their units in the International System and traditional units.
• Explanation of how to detect radiation with each type of detector and the different characteristics of each detector in recording information.
• Clarification of fundamental physics knowledge related to X-ray imaging and diagnostic devices.
• In-depth analysis of the technical factors governing the interaction of radiation with matter, and those used in diagnostic imaging.
