The verses (78-81) of Surah Al-Ma'idah are a powerful admonition and a historical account. They describe the consequences of Israel's disobedience and the rejection of God's clear signs, leading to their transformation into apes and pigs, and their curse from God.
**Verse 78:** "Cursed were the ones who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing."
This verse highlights that the Children of Israel, through their disbelief, earned a curse pronounced by two prominent prophets, David and Jesus. The reason for this curse was their persistent disobedience and transgression of God's commands.
**Verse 79:** "They used to not forbid one another from wrongful deeds which they committed. How wretched was that which they used to do."
The verse further explains their sin by pointing out their failure to enjoin good and forbid evil among themselves. They allowed wrongdoing to proliferate, which is described as a terrible and wretched state. This implies a societal decay and a loss of moral accountability.
**Verse 80:** "You see many of them turning to those who disbelieve in Allah. How wretched is that which their souls have sent forward for them [in the hereafter], and Allah is disgusted with them, and in punishment they will abide eternally."
This verse reveals a specific manifestation of their disbelief: their alliance and turning to those who reject Allah. This choice is seen as a grave error, one that will have dire consequences in the afterlife. Allah is displeased with them, and they are destined for eternal punishment. The phrase "their souls have sent forward for them" refers to the deeds they committed, which will determine their fate.
**Verse 81:** "And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them [the disbelievers] as allies, but they were, among them, men [who were] transgressors."
This verse offers a contrasting scenario: had they truly believed in Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, and the revelation sent to him, they would not have aligned themselves with disbelievers. Their association with those who reject Allah is presented as a direct contradiction to genuine faith. The verse concludes by stating that among them were transgressors, indicating that their actions were not representative of all, but certainly a significant and influential portion.
**Overall Theme:**
These verses serve as a stern warning about the dangers of disbelief, disobedience, and the failure to uphold moral principles. They illustrate the severe consequences that can follow such deviations, both in this world and the hereafter. The transformation into apes and pigs is often interpreted as a metaphorical representation of their moral degradation – becoming like animals in their transgressions and lack of humanity. The verses also emphasize the importance of true faith, righteous action, and the establishment of a community that upholds justice and forbids wrongdoing. .
