Criminal Psychology

Course Description: General Course Description: The course covers the definition of forensic psychology and its historical development, along with the study of criminal behavior, its definition, identification, and approaches to its study. The course also reviews theories explaining criminal behavior, in addition to the psychological harm that a victim may experience. The course also includes crime classification and some types of behavioral deviation, and antisocial personality, in addition to the psychological profile of the offender, criminal interrogation from a psychological perspective, and psychological services in correctional institutions.

Objectives of the course :

This course aims to introduce the student to criminal psychology and its areas of study, as well as the psychological aspects of the personalities of the offender, the criminal, the witness, the judge, and the investigator. It also aims to enable the student to understand the role of preventive and punitive institutions, and to learn about the role of the psychologist in dealing with criminal phenomena and deviant behavior within penal institutions, and their responsibilities towards the offender and the victim. This includes understanding common crime patterns and their contributing factors, as well as juvenile delinquency and the role of the family in addressing these cases.

– The student knows forensic psychology, its related concepts, and its fields of study
The student will know the types of crime and the methods used to study its motives, theories explaining crime and deviant behavior, as well as psychopathic personality.
- The student can distinguish the factors affecting crime growth
The student acquires the skill of understanding, predicting, and discerning criminal behavior and deviance.
The student will explain the psychological effects resulting from crime and the role of punitive and preventive institutions in reducing them.
– The student will evaluate the psychological methods used in criminal interrogation and propose effective strategies for dealing with them.
- The student should identify the required skills that a psychologist must possess when dealing with both the offender and the victim, and apply theoretical knowledge to design preventive and therapeutic programs to address deviant behavior within correctional institutions.
