Personality theories

Course Description: The course includes: Introduction to personality: its definition, components, and methods of study. Personality theories: classical and modern analytical trends, social psychoanalysis, early academic theories, trait theory, humanistic trend, behavioral trend, cognitive trend, and contemporary theories in the study of personality.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: PSY 1101
Objectives of the course :

The course aims to:
• Understanding the importance of personality, its nature, components, dimensions, and a brief history of its development.
• Understanding the role of personality in shaping behavior, and thus the emergence of individual differences across individuals, groups, and societies. .
• Understanding the main theories and trends that have focused on understanding the nature of human personality and how it is formed, as a necessary step to uncover the factors that contribute to personality formation, identify the strengths and weaknesses of the theories, and find ways to modify them in the desired positive direction.
• Assisting students in forming their own perspectives on human nature and personality in light of theories and their discussions.

  • The student knows the concept of personality, its historical development in study, and its theories.
  • The student should mention the impact of environment and genetics in personality formation, with an awareness of its measurement methods.
