Radiation physics

Course Description: Definition of radiation quantities, radiation doses, and units – Radiation dose measuring devices – Radiation and radioactive contamination control – Biological effects of radiation – Internal and external radiation exposure – Radiation protection and radiation barriers – Radiation dose calculations and shielding – International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommendations – Protection from various radiation sources – Radioactive decontamination – Radioactive waste management.
Credits: 2
Prerequisites: PHYS481
Objectives of the course :

Provide the student with an understanding of the fundamentals of radiation physics and prepare them for work in the field of radioactive isotope applications.

Course outputs :

At the end of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
1- Identifying the different property methods of radiation types and radiation units of measurement
2- Learn how to prevent radiation
3. Understanding how to calculate equivalent doses from beta, gamma, and neutron radiation exposure
4. Follow up on recommendations issued by bodies concerned with ionizing radiation regarding annual permissible exposure limits for workers in the field of radioactive isotopes, for the general public, and also regarding methods of transporting and storing radioactive materials.
