Pharmaceuticals (2)

Course Description: This course covers the design, preparation, and evaluation of advanced dosage forms and drug delivery systems. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how the properties of pharmaceutical materials and excipients influence drug release from delivery platforms. The course integrates theory with laboratory experience in preparing and testing dosage forms (solid, semi-solid, sterile, and respiratory), with an emphasis on quality control, stability, and performance.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: PHT 221
Objectives of the course :

The aim of this course is to:

Developing the ability to understand the technical principles and processes necessary for the preparation and manufacturing of solid, semi-solid, sterile, and respiratory dosage forms.

Analysis of product quality aspects through the employment of unified methods to evaluate the performance and stability of solid, semi-solid, sterile, and respiratory drug dosage forms.

Course outputs :

Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Outcomes):
The student describes the composition, properties, and uses of different semi-solid dosage forms (e.g., ointments and creams).

The student identifies the modular manufacturing steps and essential quality characteristics for tablets, capsules, and sterile preparations.
2- Practical and intellectual skills:
The student compares the different bases of semi-solid preparations (e.g., ointments vs. creams) to choose the most suitable one for a specific drug and a specific clinical use.

The student differentiates between granulation (agglomeration) techniques by analyzing their impact on the final tablet's properties and performance.

The student evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of different respiratory device types (metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, nebulizers) for specific patient populations.

The student prepares a semi-solid dosage form (ointment/cream) using standard equipment and materials according to a specified master formula.
3- Values and Responsibility (Behavioral and Ethical Outcomes):
The student collaborates effectively within the team by performing assigned tasks and contributing to the achievement of shared laboratory goals.

The student upholds laboratory safety and quality standards by consistently adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and correcting unsafe practices.
