Course Description: This course introduces the fundamental principles of physical pharmacy by applying concepts from chemistry, physics, and mathematics to pharmaceutical dosage forms. Students will learn theories related to solubility, distribution, drug kinetics, drug interactions, and formulation stability to understand the composition and development of various dosage forms. The course also integrates theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory skills in preparing basic liquid formulations.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: MATH135
Objectives of the course :

The aim of this course is to:
Understanding the physical and chemical properties that control drug behavior for the design of liquid pharmaceutical dosage forms.
2. Developing practical competence and accuracy in pharmaceutical calculations, handling materials, and preparing basic liquid pharmaceutical formulations.
3. Enhance understanding of the relationship between the drug's physical properties, the pharmaceutical formulation, and the stability, performance, and quality of the final product.

Course outputs :

1. Description of pharmaceutical calculations principles, concentration calculations, and tonicity adjustments
2. Description of the physical and chemical principles governing solubility, surface phenomena, and rheology.
3. Calculating drug concentrations, performing dilutions, and adjusting tonicity using mathematical operations
4. Using standard laboratory equipment to prepare liquid pharmaceutical dosage forms
5. Analysis of structural properties by measuring and interpreting physical and chemical properties
6. Integrating physical pharmacy principles for the development and formulation of simple liquid dosage forms
7. Demonstrating responsibility and adherence to safety and quality standards within the laboratory
8. Working in a team to prepare pharmaceutical formulations and document procedures
