Pharmaceutical Microbiology

Course Description: This course covers the fundamentals of pharmaceutical medical microbiology. It focuses on the biological characteristics of various groups of microbes, including classification, nomenclature, structure, nutrition, metabolism, culturing, growth, and genetics. In addition, it covers pathogenic agents, modes of transmission, mechanisms of disease development (pathogenesis), laboratory diagnosis, prevention, control, and treatment of the most medically important infectious diseases.

Objectives of the course :

• Describe the fundamentals of pharmaceutical microbiology, focusing on the history of microbiology development, the biological characteristics of different groups of microbes, their classification, nomenclature, structure, nutrition, metabolic processes, cultivation methods, growth, and genetic aspects.
• A statement of the differences between bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and the methods for their cultivation and identification.
• Explanation of the concept of sterilization and antibiotics, and their mechanisms of action.
• Explanation of antimicrobial agents (other than antibiotics), their calibration methods, and the evaluation of their efficacy.
• Description of mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics.
• Explanation of the microbiological aspects related to pharmaceutical manufacturing processes

• Knowledge of basic information related to bacteria, fungi, viruses, and microbial genetics.
• Explanation of the different types of antibiotics and antimicrobial agents, and the concept of sterilization.
• Mechanisms of action of antibiotics and methods of antimicrobial resistance.
• Microbial genetics and antimicrobial activity testing.
• Knowledge of operating various types of microbiological equipment in the laboratory and working in a sterile environment.
