Foundations of Soil Science

Course Description: Theoretical: Introduction, definition of soil, origin, development, and factors of soil formation, soil mineralogy, soil morphology, land classification, introduction to the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil, soil weathering, introduction to factors affecting plant growth, soil fertility, and fertilization. Practical: Introduction to soil sampling for physical and chemical analysis. Physical properties of soil to estimate soil texture, soil structure, soil density, soil porosity, soil water forms, and available water for absorption. Also, estimation of soil salinity, soil reaction, and cation exchange capacity. Introduction to fertilizers.

Prerequisites: PHYS 105
