Critical Care Nursing

Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to qualify them as nurses capable of caring for critically ill patients who require special attention not only due to organic illness but also due to the accompanying psychological or social disturbances. Through this course, the focus will be on laboratory analyses required for critical cases and their indicators, medications used for such cases, their nutritional methods, and specialized nursing skills for these situations. The course also offers an opportunity to apply theory in simulation labs or real environments, ensuring patient and student safety. The practical activity will allow students to practice analyzing critical care situations, setting priorities, and making the safest decisions to ensure quality and safety.

Objectives of the course :

Describe the physiological and pathological responses to critical conditions requiring intensive care.
2. Utilize the nursing care plan to meet all the needs of critically ill patients, including psychological needs. .
Demonstrate skills in handling the various equipment used in critical care departments and units.
4. Identify medications used to treat critical conditions. .
5. Identify various diagnostic methods in critical care. .
6. Clarification of nursing care for patients in various critical care units. .
7. Formulating nursing diagnoses related to critical conditions in various intensive care unit departments. .
8. Develop specific nursing procedures for patients in various critical care departments and units. .

Course outputs :

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

• Demonstrates the ability to plan and implement evidence-based, age-appropriate therapeutic interventions for life-threatening conditions in intensive care units.
• Identifies life-saving tools used in the care of ICU patients.
• Provides nursing care to unconscious patients in critical conditions.
• Conducts health assessments and physical examinations for critically ill patients.
• Provides nursing interventions according to ICU policies and protocols.
• Prioritizes nursing interventions according to the needs of critically ill patients with various health conditions.
Assesses the nutritional and fluid status of patients in hemodynamically unstable critical conditions.
• Practices skills in the safe use of intensive care equipment and tools, including patient monitors, beds, ventilators, hemodynamic monitors, blood gas analyzers, and infusion pumps.
• Lists the needs of the patient's family and close relatives in the intensive care unit and plans appropriate nursing interventions to meet these needs.
• Practicing principles of effective communication within the healthcare team and with patients.
