Concepts in pain management

Course Description: This course aims to equip students with concepts related to the care of adults and the elderly and their families in pain management. The course content relies on key concepts related to communication and relationships concerning pain, symptom management, and legal and ethical aspects when addressing the psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of the patient. It also covers the application of theories and concepts related to pain across the adult lifespan, including medical and surgical cases, and the use and application of the nursing process, as well as pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies for pain management, through the information, skills, and attitudes that students will acquire in caring for the individual and the family.
Credit hours: 3
Objectives of the course :

1. Review of pain concepts. .
2. Identify different pain theories.
3. Identify different therapeutic and non-therapeutic pain management methods.
4. Analysis of different models for pain assessment and management and their uses in healthcare institutions.
5. Discuss the legal, ethical, spiritual, and cultural issues that affect effective pain management. .
6. Utilizing nursing knowledge when practicing effective cognitive, psychomotor, and affective nursing in pain management. .
7. Identify interventions to enhance comfort during pain and symptoms for adult and elderly patients. .
8. Identifying the main needs of the patient and family related to care for adults and elderly patients for pain management and planning to meet these needs. .
9. Using scientific evidence to support decisions regarding pain management. .

Course outputs :

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

 

1. Acquires knowledge in the context of physiology, pharmacology, and psychology concerning the assessment and treatment of pain in individuals.
2. It develops students' attitudes, values, awareness, and sense of responsibility, rather than focusing solely on knowledge or cognitive skills, regarding pain management.
Participates in pain assessment and the development of evidence-based care plans, which consider the social, psychological, and biological aspects of the pain condition.
4. Demonstrates empathy and effective communication with patients, their families, and caregivers regarding a variety of pain management approaches.
5. Discusses pain management approaches for different age groups.
6. Discusses pain prevention strategies across different age groups.
