Obstetrics

Course Description: This elective course is designed to provide students with knowledge of midwifery theories and practices. It aims to provide an academic foundation for the development of midwifery and maternal care. It aims to enable students to provide high-quality care and excel in their practice. The course presents specialized information on theories and applications of midwifery care in obstetrics. It emphasizes the development of midwifery nurse management skills in caring for women with diverse backgrounds who are at low risk of pregnancy complications. The focus will be on primary care, prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care, newborn care, and women's health care across different life stages.

Objectives of the course :

1. Application of knowledge of the physiological, psychological, and social aspects of parents receiving care from the nurse/midwife. .
2. Meeting women's reproductive health needs, including safe childbirth and child care services. .
3. Enhancing the professional role of nurses in providing excellent care to women of reproductive age and their families. .
4. Understanding the midwife's role in providing and coordinating maternal care and support services. .
5. Encourage and facilitate midwifery as primary healthcare. .
Providing healthcare for women, families, and newborns to ensure comprehensive care. .
7. Promote collaborative work within a multidisciplinary care team and foster positive and effective relationships.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

Explains the basic concepts of midwifery nursing, describing the scope of practice, philosophy, and roles of a midwife in the care of mother and child postpartum.
2. Describes the normal pregnancy process, including physiological, anatomical, and hormonal changes in women.
3. Identifies the stages of labor/postpartum after childbirth, and provides appropriate care during the postpartum and neonatal periods.
4. Applies principles of prenatal obstetric nursing care, including health education, counseling, and preventive care for pregnant women.
5. Demonstrates safe nursing care during labor, including monitoring labor progress and supporting normal birth.
6. Provides comprehensive postpartum care to promote physical recovery, mental health, breastfeeding, and family adjustment.
7. Discusses women's health issues, family planning methods, and counseling female patients on reproductive health and contraception.
Analyzes the ethical principles and legal responsibilities in the practice of maternal-newborn nursing and their application in clinical decision-making.
Integrates evidence-based practices and current trends in midwifery care to improve maternal and infant outcomes.
10. Clarifies professional roles and leadership skills, including teamwork, communication, documentation, and advocating for the rights of mothers and newborns in midwifery practice.
