Epidemiology for Nursing

Course Description: Epidemiology is a nursing curriculum for nursing students that provides essential information, knowledge, and practical skills about infectious diseases, as well as modes of transmission for endemic and common diseases. This, in turn, equips students with comprehensive knowledge about the concepts of health, disease, public epidemics, infectious and non-infectious diseases, and the rates and proportions of morbidity and mortality in the Kingdom. This allows for an understanding of the fundamentals of epidemiology, control procedures, and an introduction to statistical analysis methods. This will enable students to acquire a solid foundation in appropriate investigation and analysis methods for the spread of infectious diseases.

Objectives of the course :

1. Identify the epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases.
2. Identify concepts of health and illness.
3. Identify the main data sources for epidemic diseases.
4. Identification of infectious diseases (rubella, tetanus, HIV, hepatitis, etc.). .
5. Identification of mandatory vaccinations during childhood in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. .
6. Discussion of disease prevalence and mortality rates in Saudi Arabia. .
7. Discussion of screening principles for disease control. .

Explains the scope and role of epidemiology in public health and nursing practice.
2. Describes disease spread patterns and health determinants among different population groups.
Distinguish between descriptive and analytical epidemiology and their applications.
4. Compares the main epidemiological study designs in terms of their objectives, strengths, and limitations.
Explains epidemiological measures and basic statistical indicators used in clinical and community health settings.
6. Epidemiological data are analyzed using basic frequency, incidence, and mortality measures.
7. Explains epidemic and pandemic disease patterns, including emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
Applies epidemiological principles to support disease prevention and health promotion strategies in nursing practice.
9. Analyze the essential steps of disease outbreak investigation and response relevant to nursing practice. Describe epidemiology and key topics related to public health.
Demonstrates awareness of the ethical, social, and political implications of using epidemiological and health statistics data in public health decision-making.
