Thermal Fluid Systems

Course Description: Review of fundamental concepts of thermodynamics and fluid systems, pumping systems, pressure systems, steam generation systems, turbines, condensers, and water desalination systems.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: ME 372
Objectives of the course :

1. Introduce the student to fundamental concepts of thermal fluids.
Provide the student with extensive knowledge to apply equations in analyzing pumping systems.
3. Enable the student to distinguish between different types of compressors and perform performance analysis.
4. Enable the student to analyze steam generation systems and solve related problems.
Provide the student with the necessary equations for analyzing important types of turbines.
6. Introduce students to capacitors and how to apply related equations to perform energy analysis.

Course outputs :

1. Identify the fundamental concepts of thermofluid systems.
2. Identify the main components of pumping systems, compressor systems, steam generation systems, turbine systems, and water desalination systems, and their classifications.
3. Acquiring the necessary skill to read and analyze pump performance curves and use them for correct pump selection.
4. Acquiring the necessary skill to study the performance and analysis of compressors, turbines, and condensers according to thermodynamic laws.
5. Ability to compare different types of steam generators.
6. Acquiring the necessary skills for studying the performance and analysis of desalination systems.
7. Ability to develop informed judgments and/or decisions that consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, sustainability, and societal contexts.
