Pumping machines

Course Description: Terminology used, and description of typical pumping machinery. Momentum and energy transfer between fluid and impeller. Performance characteristics of centrifugal and axial fans, compressors, and pumps. Different types of losses. Positive displacement pumps. Cavitation problems and hydraulic methods in pump systems. Special problems in pump design and applications. Laboratory experiments will include performance evaluation of different types of pumps and discussions to study the solution of pumping problems.

Prerequisites: ME 385
Objectives of the course :

1. Enable students to understand different types of pumps.
2. Enable students to identify the basic concepts of momentum and energy transfer between the fluid and the impeller.
3. Preparing students to understand the performance of fans, compressors, and pumps.
4. Enable students to understand design and excavation problems in waterways.

Course outputs :

Student's acquisition of a deep understanding of pumping machines.
