Compressible Fluids

Course Description: Thermal and fluid aspects of fluid flow and efficiencies of turbomachinery. Two-dimensional blade rows: correlation relationships and performance of turbine and compressor blade rows. Axial turbines (two-dimensional analysis). Axial flow compressors and fans (two-dimensional analysis). Centrifugal compressors and fans. Radial inflow turbines.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: ME 385
Objectives of the course :

Main Course Objectives:

  • Introducing the student to the thermal and fluid aspects of fluid flow and the efficiencies of turbomachinery.
  • Enable the student to compare the performance of two-dimensional blade rows in turbines and compressors.
  • Enable the student to recognize axial turbines and perform their performance analysis.
  • Provide the student with the necessary equations for axial flow compressor analysis.
  • Enable the student to distinguish between centrifugal compressors and fans and perform their performance analysis.
  • Enable the student to identify the characteristics of radial flow turbines and analyze their performance.
Course outputs :
  • Definition of Concepts of Thermal and Fluid Aspects of Fluid Flow and Efficiencies of Turbomachinery.
  • Identifying 2D feather rows in turbines and compressors.
  • Axial turbines have blades that are arranged in a way that the fluid flows parallel to the axis of rotation. The fluid enters the turbine at one end and exits at the other, passing through a series of rotating blades. Radial flow turbines (also known as Francis turbines) have blades that are arranged radially. The fluid enters the turbine at the center and flows outward, or enters at the periphery and flows inward, perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
  • Identify the characteristics of axial flow compressors and centrifugal compressors.
  • Analysis of the performance of two-dimensional blade rows in turbines and compressors.
  • Perform performance analysis of compressors and turbines using appropriate engineering principles.
  • Distinguishing between different types of turbines (e.g., axial turbines, radial flow turbines, and others).
  • Distinguishing between different types of compressors (such as axial compressors, centrifugal compressors, and others).
  • Develop informed engineering judgments and decisions that take into account the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, sustainability, and societal contexts.
