Mechanical Design (2)

Course Description: Design of elements: Bearings (plain bearings and anti-friction bearings); spur, helical, bevel, and worm gears; flexible couplings (belts and chains); clutches and brakes; springs; design optimization. Laboratory sessions to support and apply materials covered in lectures. Consideration of manufacturing aspects in design (limits and fits); phased projects leading to a complete assembly.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: ME 340
Objectives of the course :

Students are expected to analyze mechanical systems and select appropriate mechanical components (bearings, gears, pulleys, belts, etc.) from commercial catalogs for a specific application.
2. Students are expected to be able to analyze proposed design solutions and suggest modifications and improvements.
The student should be able to implement original designs for mechanical elements.
4. The student should be able to produce design drawings and integrate designed or selected components into a functional mechanical system.
The student will be able to convene and lead effective design team meetings and write their minutes.
The student will be able to apply design procedures to implement complete design projects individually and within teams.
7. The student is expected to communicate design ideas through the completion of production drawings, technical reports, and oral presentations.

Course outputs :

1. Knowledge and understanding:
Students must know the names of the main parts of bearings, gears, pulleys, belts, brakes, and clutches.
Students must know and be able to identify the function of any covered mechanical component.
