Thermodynamics (1)

Course Description: Fundamentals and definitions of thermodynamics, properties of pure substances, the first law of thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, the Carnot cycle and the reversed Carnot cycle, the simple and modified Rankine cycle, gas power cycles, and refrigeration cycles and heat pumps.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: CHEM111
Objectives of the course :

Introduce students to the fundamental concepts of the first and second laws of thermodynamics and their applications in engineering problems.
2) Provide comprehensive treatment of thermodynamics for students.
3) Prepare students to effectively use thermodynamics in engineering practice.
4) Preparing students to effectively analyze basic thermodynamic power and refrigeration cycles.

Course outputs :

Knowledge and Understanding
1.1 Gain a deep understanding of the definitions and concepts of thermodynamics.
1.2 Define the energy equation, i.e., the first law of thermodynamics, and the different forms of energy that can be transferred between systems and the surroundings.
1.3 Acquire extensive knowledge of heat engines, refrigerators, and heat pumps, and how to evaluate them based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics applications.
1.4 Identify the different phases of pure substances and the ability to use their tables.
1.5 Analysis of different power and cooling cycles, such as using various tables and relationships to calculate the properties of the working fluid at the inlets and outlets of different components.
