Measurements and Instrumentation

Course Description: The vocabulary of this course centers on measurement concepts, experimental procedures, dimensional standards, and units of measurement, with a focus on analyzing, evaluating, and presenting experimental data. It explores analog measurements, their temporal characteristics, and the response of measurement systems, as well as signal conditioning. Additionally, it reviews digital techniques in mechanical measurements and their applications in measuring displacement, motion, force, and torque. It also covers strain, stress, pressure, temperature, and flow measurements, culminating in a study of various industrial sensors.

Objectives of the course :

The main objectives of the course are to introduce students to the fundamental principles of measurement systems, including various sensing methods. It aims to equip them with the necessary knowledge about signal classification and analysis techniques, while teaching them how measurement systems respond to diverse signal inputs. Additionally, it will enable students to conduct various experiments in mechanical measurements, become familiar with display and recording elements, and their applications in measuring temperature, flow, pressure, force, level, displacement, and other common physical parameters.

Course outputs :

1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1. Understanding the fundamental concepts of measurements: the process of measurement, the main components of a general measurement system and their functions, the experimental test plan, random and systematic errors, different types of errors, Uncertainty, standards, calibration, and dimensions in different unit systems.

1.2. Ability to describe the dynamic response of first-order and second-order measurement systems.

1.3. Identify the characteristics of a data acquisition system (e.g., sampling rate and resolution).

2. Skills:
2.1. Ability to explain the physical principles of measurements for displacement, motion, strain, force, torque, temperature, pressure, and flow rate.

2.2. Ability to calculate the output of measurement instruments: displacement, motion, strain, force, torque, temperature, pressure, and flow rate.

2.3. Ability to measure displacement, motion, strain, force, torque, temperature, pressure, and flow rate using experimental (laboratory) setups.

2.4. Ability to use basic laboratory equipment safely and appropriately.
