Course Description: This course covers the fundamental principles of hematology, including blood cell formation and function, hemoglobin synthesis, bone marrow physiology, and disorders of red blood cells, anemia, and hemoglobinopathies. It also focuses on essential laboratory techniques in hematology, including sample collection, preparing and staining blood smears, performing complete blood counts, and laboratory quality control.

Prerequisites: MDL 260
Objectives of the course :

1. Introduce students to the basics of hematopoiesis, different blood cells, and their functions.
2. Study of common blood disorders, especially anemia and hemoglobinopathies.
3. Developing practical skills in performing basic blood tests and applying quality procedures in a hematology laboratory.

Course outputs :

• Explains the mechanisms of hematopoiesis and the characteristics and functions of different blood cells.
• Differentiates between various blood disorders and explains their associated morphological changes.
• Applies basic hematology laboratory techniques, including preparing and staining blood smears and performing routine tests.
